Robinson thought that the instrumental, with all its ornate woodwind flourishes, sounded like a circus, so he decided to write something circus-themed. So they brought it to the Motown Christmas party that year, and they gave it to Smokey Robinson.

Stevie Wonder and his producer Hank Crosby wrote the music for “The Tears Of A Clown” in 1966, and they recorded an instrumental demo for it, but they couldn’t come up with any lyrics that suited that instrumental. “The Tears Of A Clown,” the song that finally got them there, was one of the all-time great accidental hits. And when they got there, they did it with a song that was already years old. He wrote Mary Wells’ “ My Guy” in 1964, and a year later, he and his fellow Miracle Ronald White wrote the Temptations’ “ My Girl.”īut Robinson and the Miracles didn’t get to #1 until Robinson had already quit the group and retired from the stage. In the course of the ’60s, Robinson hit #1 twice as a songwriter. So is “ I Second That Emotion,” which topped out at #4 in 1967.) During that run, Smokey Robinson and the other Miracles wrote their own songs, and they also wrote for just about everyone else at Motown. (“ You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me,” which peaked at #8 in 1962, is a 10. Many of those hits are absolute classics. Throughout the ’60s, the Miracles cranked out hit after hit, landing in the top 10 plenty of times. It topped out at #2, blocked by the chintzy colossus that was Lawrence Welk’s “ Calcutta.” (“Shop Around” is an obvious 10.) 1960’s “ Shop Around,” an absolutely monstrous banger, was a million-seller, and it was the first major hit for Berry Gordy’s Motown company, which was only a year old at that point.

Smokey Robinson and his Miracles should’ve hit #1 a full decade before they did.

This album also features the “Wedding Song” which was written for Hazel and Jermaine Jackson’s wedding and the “Happy” theme from the movie Lady Sings the Blues. Before long, it caught on around the country and evolved into a new market. Briefly, radio mogul Cathy Hughes, owner of Radio One, was the general manager at Howard University radio WHUR during the early ’70s when she created the format “the quiet storm.” She used Smokey Robinson’s composition as the theme song. The lyric of the ballad “The Agony and the Ecstasy” hit the Top Ten at number seven, and it was followed by the masterpiece “A Quiet Storm.” Although it only managed to seal the Top 25, it has since made a greater impact on the music charts and music industry. It was Robinson’s first number one single since leaving the Miracles. Arranged in an intermittent rhythm, “Baby That’s Backatcha” ran up the Billboard R&B charts to number one inside 16 weeks. The album itself had three singles hit the charts. The title track became the namesake for a music format. As many of his prior songs had shaped R&B and pop music, this album would have a similar effect.

The genius of William “Smokey” Robinson is immeasurable. As exemplified by „A Quiet Storm“, Smokey’s gift is constant and genuine. You can’t go wrong with a Smokey Robinson record, no matter what it’s decade of origin, but this is perhaps his definitive ’70s album, defining a smooth, contemporary R&B style that would be emulated for decades to come. No less an authority and devoted fan than Bob Dylan once called Smokey Robinson, ‘the greatest living poet in a America today.’ 1975’s „A Quiet Storm“ contains all the patented Smokey touches: the sweet irresistible melodies the slow-dancing ballads the jump-for-joy love songs. Smokey’s gentle, sensual vocals are effortlessly delivered but completely captivating. Smokey Robinson invented a style of songwriting and singing that influenced artists as diverse as James Taylor, Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Boyz ll Men and Linda Ronstadt, to name just a few.
